There are a variety of options available for women seeking birth control. Most associate the term birth control with the oral pill taken daily to prevent conception. Some women opt to use diaphragms with spermicides. Woman are able to utilize implants such as IUD’s. For women who have decided that they are done having children, permanent options such as tubal ligation and Essure® are options to be considered.
How Can I Decide Which Type of Birth Control Is Right for Me?
All women are different and thus should make a personal decision of how they seek birth control. Options such as IUD’s and implants allow for a “set it and forget it” choice for a woman. Pills and diaphragms are better options for women who would prefer to have choices as to when they use birth control. Through discussion with a doctor, women are able to make the best decision to how they choose to plan their family.
What is an IUD?
An IUD is a small T-Shaped device placed in the uterus by a medical provider in office. Available in both hormonal and non-hormonal options, this long-term (up to ten years) option allows women to have stable birth control that is not affected by sickness, forgetfulness, or change of medical provider. Both types of IUD help prevent sperm from penetrating sperm by making the uterus lining more difficult to penetrate as well as creating an environment that prevents sperm from living long after ejaculation.
What Is Nexplanon®?
Nexplanon is a hormonal form of long-term birth control. It is typically inserted in the arm away from sight by a health care professional. While functioning effectively, this type of birth control provides three years of continual coverage. Like the IUD, this allows women to not have to worry about taking a pill every day or worry about the negative effects of antibiotics reducing the effectiveness of the birth control. Additionally, Nexplanon allows women to have choices as to when they have children because it can be removed immediately upon choice from the woman.
