What Is Pediatrics?

Pediatric Doctors are providers that specialize in care for people under the age of 19. These providers are aware of specific conditions that can affect children and adolescents but often dissipate at adulthood. Pediatric doctors are trained to detect issues that parents are not always able to notice without training.

Why Is Having a Pediatrician Important?

Pediatricians specialize in diagnosis and treatment of multiple conditions among children and adolescents including:

  • Injuries
  • Infections
  • Genetic and congenital conditions
  • Cancers
  • Organ diseases and dysfunctions

While treatment of disease and pathology is always important, pediatricians are also able to help parents manage the quality of life of their child. Through prevention of disease through vaccination, early detection and treatment of disorders, and management of chronic conditions, pediatricians are able to help patients manage a variety of problems including:

  • Developmental delays and disorders
  • Behavioral problems
  • Functional disabilities
  • Social stressors
  • Mental disorders including depression and anxiety

Pediatricians are seeking to reduce infant mortality rates, reduce the spread of infectious disease, teach and educate parents about healthy lifestyles and diet, and create a better health outlook for all families. Often diseases and disorders that are left untreated in childhood can cause a variety of problems later in adulthood. Pediatricians are the first line of defense to reduce this chance of health complication later in life.

How Does Pediatrics Differ from Adult Medicine?

Children are not merely mini adults. Smaller bodies that are still developing can encounter a variety of problems that adults do not notice. Additionally, adults may not realize the psychological effect that chronic illness can cause for a child. Genetic defects can cause problems that if left untreated can cause problems for a child during adolescence. Finally, due to legal jurisdiction, most children are unable to advocate for their own health care. A pediatrician will advocate for children with empirically backed treatments and interventions.
